The Mom Parts Method

Mom Parts is the first creative incorporation of Internal Family Systems into the complex psychology of motherhood. We start with the basic assumption that moms’ minds (like everyone else’s) are made up of multiple parts that hold different hopes, fears, beliefs and agendas.

We help moms notice and identify their protector parts - the ones who are active and working hard in their systems, holding it all together and feeling overburdened. We focus first on helping those parts get the respect and care they need.

Internal Family Systems for Moms

Mom Parts helps moms find some harmony between their devotion to their children and interest in their own well-being.

Identifying your protectors and helping them relax is the key to improving your mental health.

When your protectors are relaxed, you become calmer and wiser.

You have more clarity and openness, which allows you to see the world with a wider lens, giving you choices and more freedom.​

And - you stop handing down the B.S. that your parents handed down to you, that was handed down to them.

Taking incredible, loving care of yourself is the most empowered, anti-patriarchal form of rebellion.

The Inescapable Vulnerabilities: Grief and Shame

No one talks about how inextricably intertwined motherhood is with shame and grief. The shadow side of motherhood, underneath and around the bend from the sunshine we are sold, always includes both shame and grief. By taking these experiences out of the shadows, Mom Parts helps remove stigma and judgment from the landscape of maternal suffering and invites us into heart-opening practices that include and tend to our pain. What society labels as "disorders" are often protective responses to navigating motherhood without adequate support and validation. Without addressing these deeper patterns, we risk perpetuating intergenerational cycles of trauma and maternal struggle.

Speaking the Truth

Mom Parts offers simple Truths to moms, designed to reach and soften Inner Critics, helping moms see and accept the reality of their situation with more compassion.​

​

Speaking the Truth - though it may be uncomfortable - leads in the direction of self-trust.

Remedies

We have two internal resources available to us: protectors and what IFS calls "Self-energy," our true nature that cannot be damaged and doesn't have to be cultivated. Accessing our own Self-energy gives us the support we need, from the inside.

​

As long as we feel unsafe, our protectors will keep protecting (avoiding, guarding against, compensating, exiling). We won't feel connected to our Self-energy, or able to embody true curiosity, compassion or confidence.

​

Through the five steps of the Mom Parts Method, we are able to soften and relax our protectors, revealing more of our own natural internal resources. These resources (Self-energy in IFS language) are the remedies our parts need from us.
